When Salt Lake City was gearing up for the hottest day of the year, we had the perfect plan: beat the heat by heading into the mountains before sunrise.
Our Alpine Swim Club crew met bright and early in American Fork Canyon while the air was still crisp and cool. It was hard to believe we’d be facing record breaking temperatures later that afternoon as we wanted to start our hike in jackets and long sleeves.
The 2.5 mile climb to Silver Lake was the perfect way to wake up. As the sun climbed higher, so did the temperature, making that first glimpse of the lake even sweeter. We arrived around 9:00 a.m. to sparkling water, blue skies, and a mountain backdrop that made every early alarm worth it.
After settling in, we enjoyed lunch by the lake before it was time for the main event: jumping into the icy alpine water. For some, it was an easy yes. For others, it meant facing nerves, stepping outside their comfort zone, and taking the plunge anyway. Watching everyone encourage each other and celebrate those brave moments is one of our favorite parts of Alpine Swim Club.
Of course, there was no shortage of laughter. Between cold water shrieks, snack breaks, and soaking up the sunshine on the shoreline, the morning flew by.
On our hike back down, we made one final stop at Silver Lake Flat Reservoir for another refreshing dip before heading home. Two swims in one day? We couldn’t think of a better way to survive Utah’s hottest day of the year.
We’re incredibly proud of everyone who joined us. Adventure isn’t always about reaching the biggest summit. Sometimes it’s simply saying yes to an early morning, trying something that scares you, or showing up to meet new people.
Thanks to everyone who made another Alpine Swim Club adventure so much fun. We’ll see you at the next one!
