There’s something a little surreal about walking into a TV studio to talk about a community that started with a single social media post. But that’s exactly what I got to do again this week, and I still can’t quite believe it.
This past Friday, I had the chance to head back to FOX 13’s The Place to talk about one of my favorite GOAT events of the year: the GOAT Outdoor Gear & Clothing Swap. If you missed it live, don’t worry, you can watch the full segment here.
What We Talked About
For anyone just discovering GOAT, I got to share the story that never gets old to tell: how Girls Only Adventure Trips started after I moved to Salt Lake City not knowing a single person, made a post looking for other women to hike with, and watched it grow into a whole community of women who show up for each other on and off the trail.
Then we got to the fun part… the Swap itself.
The idea is simple, and it’s one of my favorites. For the past few weeks, women have been dropping off gently-used outdoor gear and apparel they’re no longer using. Then, on swap day, other women get to shop those pieces and take home something that’s “new to them.” It’s part treasure hunt, part sustainability win, part excuse to get the community together in one room. You truly never know what you’ll walk out with.
Why This Event Means So Much
Good outdoor gear isn’t cheap, and cost is one of the quiet barriers that keeps women from getting outside in the first place. A swap chips away at that. It puts quality gear into more hands, keeps perfectly good pieces out of the landfill, and reminds everyone that adventure doesn’t have to come with a giant price tag.
But more than the gear, it’s about the room full of women. Every GOAT event comes back to the same thing: connection. The swap is just one more reason to show up, meet someone new, and feel like you belong here.
