Monday morning, January 19th, we gathered to celebrate MLK Jr Day the best way we know how: together, outside, and moving with intention. Our Local GOAT hike to Stewart Falls felt like a fitting way to spend the holiday, trading routines for fresh air and shared experience.
The trail to Stewart Falls welcomed us with a true winter atmosphere. Snow lined the path, trees stood quiet and bare, and the steady crunch of boots set the pace as we climbed. The group settled in quickly, conversations unfolding naturally as we made our way through the canyon. There was an unspoken sense of calm that comes from starting a day slowly and deliberately.
As we approached the falls, the sound of water cut through the stillness. Stewart Falls was partially frozen, cascading over rock framed by ice and snow. We paused here, taking photos, catching our breath, and standing quietly in appreciation of the moment. It felt less like a destination and more like a shared pause in the middle of a meaningful morning.
The hike back down carried a reflective energy. Smiles came easily, conversations deepened, and the trail felt lighter underfoot. Back at the trailhead, we shifted once again into trailgate mode.
Jimmy John’s made its now familiar appearance, sandwiches unwrapped in the parking lot as layers came off and laughter filled the space. What started as a hike turned into an easy, communal lunch, reinforcing what Local GOAT is all about. Connection does not stop when the miles end.
Spending MLK Jr Day on the trail was a reminder that community is built through small, intentional acts. Showing up. Moving together. Sharing space and a meal. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Stewart Falls and helped make the morning one worth remembering.
