There are nights when the weather looks determined to ruin your plans, and you show up anyway. Last night was one of those nights, and somehow, against a sky full of popup storms, we got the whole thing mostly to ourselves.
We met up for a Hiking Happy Hour in Millcreek Canyon, taking the Rattlesnake Gulch trail up to the Pipeline Trail and out to the Pipeline Overlook. If you’ve done it, you know the deal: the climb up to the pipeline is steep. No warmup, no easing in, just legs and lungs and a few honest “okay, this is a lot” laughs on the way up. That first stretch earns you every bit of the view.
And then it mellows. Once you hit the Pipeline Trail itself, the grade flattens into that gentle, contouring path that hugs the canyon wall. The kind of trail that lets you finally catch your breath and, more importantly, actually talk. That’s the whole magic of it. The hard part pulls the group together, and the easy part gives you room to connect. By the time we reached the overlook, conversations were flowing as easily as the trail.
The real miracle of the evening? The rain. Storms kept popping up all around the valley, and we watched them roll and threaten from the ridge, but not a single one landed on us. We stayed dry, the light stayed gorgeous, and we got that rare, moody, post-storm glow over the canyon that you can’t plan for.
Naturally, an evening that good deserved a proper finish, so we carried the good vibes down the mountain and straight to dinner at Barbacoa. Nothing closes out a steep climb quite like good food and better company.
